Artifacts at Homestead Museum Get Water Damage

Monday, January 4th, 2010

A water main break has caused an inch of water to be dumped over priceless artifacts in the Homestead National Monument of America . The Homestead museum  houses over 50,000 different artifacts which tell the story of homesteading in America. Notice what the article goes on to say in the Beatice Daily Sun:

“We’re making very positive progress,” said Park Superintendent Mark Engler Monday morning. “We believe nothing will be lost at this point in time. Also, in addition to that, the building is also, for the most part, drying very quickly. We remain very optimistic.”

Notice what steps were taken immediately:

Step 1- always involves shutting the water flow off

Notice how they did this:

“The water cut-off switch for the level did not stop the flowing water, prompting Engler to go back outside, clear snow off the building’s manhole cover and ultimately turn off water to the entire building with help from the deputy.” (more…)

Mold Removal

Monday, December 28th, 2009

So you have had a little Atlanta water damage, why should you be concerned about mold?

Mold is a   fungus can produce microscopic spores that are carried through the air. If it begins to grow in your home,  then it carries through the air that you and your family are breathing in.

Just like any fungus it requires moisture to survive and thrive. That is why it is absolutely imperative to stop the moisture problem dead in its tracks. If you are currently having moisture problems or have had moisture problems in bathrooms, kitchens, basements then pay close attention to what we are about to share with you

How serious is this?

Mold can cause damage to your home

Mold that’s allowed to continue growing poses several concerns including structural damage to your home as well as serious health concerns.

Since mold spores are living growing organisms, they will eat and digest anything that it lands on on including furniture, wallpaper, carpets, drywall and wood. Now you can see the threat this can pose to your home if it continues to grow out of control.

Mold can harm your health

Common mold species found in homes are Aspergillus, Stachybotrys, Cladosporium, Fusarium, and Penicillium.

Mold allergy symptoms can range anywhere from full blown out asthma attacks to irritated eyes, throats, noses, skin, and lungs. For others mold exposure can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, headaches, breathing difficulties, diarrhea, headaches, sore throats, fatigue, and dermatitis. People with existing allergies, asthma or suppressed immune systems will become hyper sensitive to developing additional infections.  Some molds even produce potentially toxic substances even carcinogenic to humans.

Since mold can pose such a dangerous threat tour families health you can see how serious it is that this is addressed immediately. The right techniques must be used or else further contamination could occur. Remember we are talking about an air borne spore here. Well meaning DIY have unwittingly spread the contaminating spores by not removing it safely.

Others have tried to use bleach to clean the mold. And while bleach will clean the area it will not necessarily kill the mold spores. Further, even if it is partially successful, dead mold still causes serious allergic reactions.

Cleanup Tips For Water Damage In Atlanta

Friday, December 4th, 2009

You come home from work to find your home a complete wet mess. Here are a few tips to help clean up your water damage Atlanta, so pay very close attention as they can mean the difference in saving your home, belongings, health and safety too.

The reason we say this is that water damage cleanup involves more than just drying out a few of your favorite dripping wet carpets. You will have to realize that you will need to deal with all kinds of flood-related problems including possible electrical problems, replacing damaged sheet rock, and preventing the mold from growing. So let’s start with safety first.

  1. We are all aware of the old saying that water and electricity do not mix. So the very first thing that you need to do to avoid possible electrocution is that if the floors are wet not to turn on any electrical switches or touch or plug in any electrical appliances. Sad to say countless people are killed by combining water and electricity each year. If the electrical panel is in a dry area then go ahead and shut off the circuit breakers until you can dry everything out. If the power has shut down itself because of the water do not attempt to turn it back on until a licensed electrician has surveyed the situation. (more…)
