You come home from work to find your home a complete wet mess. Here are a few tips to help clean up your water damage Atlanta, so pay very close attention as they can mean the difference in saving your home, belongings, health and safety too.
The reason we say this is that water damage cleanup involves more than just drying out a few of your favorite dripping wet carpets. You will have to realize that you will need to deal with all kinds of flood-related problems including possible electrical problems, replacing damaged sheet rock, and preventing the mold from growing. So let’s start with safety first.
- We are all aware of the old saying that water and electricity do not mix. So the very first thing that you need to do to avoid possible electrocution is that if the floors are wet not to turn on any electrical switches or touch or plug in any electrical appliances. Sad to say countless people are killed by combining water and electricity each year. If the electrical panel is in a dry area then go ahead and shut off the circuit breakers until you can dry everything out. If the power has shut down itself because of the water do not attempt to turn it back on until a licensed electrician has surveyed the situation.
- Do you smell gas? If you smell gas or here a hissing sound do not enter the home. Do not turn on any lights as the electrical spark could set off an explosion. That goes double for any matches, candles or any lit flames. Once you have safely evacuated the premises, contact your gas utility company.
- Hopefully you have flood insurance, so be sureto take extensive pictures to document the damage.
- Remember, flood waters often contain sewage and chemicals. So, everything that got wet must be either thrown away or cleaned and disinfected.
- Has your septic system, cesspool, or leaching system been affected by the flooding waters, then be sure to have them serviced immediately because these damaged systems can cause serious health hazards.
- Remove the mud! While it may be tempting to wait until your home dries out you must remove the mud immediately before it dries. remember that muddy water and mud do not mix! So, with your electricity turned off, take out the shovel and start scooping as much out as possible. When you get all the mud out that you can, turn off the power again & simply hose down the rest with water.
- Remove wet drywall , insulation and heating and air duct work.
- Have a licensed electrical contractor replace all electrical outlets and switches that have been damaged by the mud and water.
Hopefully these tips will help you in cleaning up your water damage Atlanta.
