A water main break has caused an inch of water to be dumped over priceless artifacts in the Homestead National Monument of America . The Homestead museum houses over 50,000 different artifacts which tell the story of homesteading in America. Notice what the article goes on to say in the Beatice Daily Sun:
“We’re making very positive progress,” said Park Superintendent Mark Engler Monday morning. “We believe nothing will be lost at this point in time. Also, in addition to that, the building is also, for the most part, drying very quickly. We remain very optimistic.”
Notice what steps were taken immediately:
Step 1- always involves shutting the water flow off
Notice how they did this:
“The water cut-off switch for the level did not stop the flowing water, prompting Engler to go back outside, clear snow off the building’s manhole cover and ultimately turn off water to the entire building with help from the deputy.”
Unfortunately the water cut off didn’t do the trick for them. They had to actually go outside and into a manhole to do so. This quick thinking probably saved many more countless books and artifacts from water damage too.
Step 2 – get rid of the water and the humidity
Notice what the article goes on to say:
“An assortment of Shop-Vac machines, fans, dehumidifiers and plastic barriers were scattered throughout the building Saturday morning as crews scurried to preserve not only exhibits and artifacts, but also dry the building’s carpet, walls and other items.”
As discussed on this blog before you must eliminate the moisture or you will eventually need mold removal in Atlanta.
Thankfully it looks like this story will have a happy ending. If we can help with your water damage repairs Atlanta, please let us know.
